What would I do?
Tasks are varied, depending on the time of day and whether an order has recently been delivered. Serving customers, shelf-stacking (light work only), date-checking, serving coffee or tea, washing up – these are just a few of the things that volunteers do. The work is varied and the time passes surprisingly quickly.

Would I have to work on the till?
Some of our volunteers prefer not to use the till. That’s fine, though it is probably easier to use than you think.

What training is provided?
Most training is done as you are working, but we offer additional training depending on your needs.

What happens if I can’t make my shift?
Our aim: To reduce the amount of cover that needs to be found
The master rota shows the regular slots, with names and times. Please note unavailability already notified is not shown on this master copy.

What to do if you can’t make your shift:

f a reserve is shown (in italics) within ‘your’ slot, contact the relevant person to ask if they can swap with you, or cover for you. Contact details can be found on the email sent to you by Lesley, entitled The Saturday team (or whichever day(s) is relevant to you).

If you can organise a swap or cover, please email shoprota@btconnect.com using the header ROTA CHANGES AGREED, stating clearly who is doing what and when.
Alternatively, please give a written note to Julie or Mary in the shop.

If you can’t organise a swap or cover, please email shoprota@btconnect.com using the header ROTA COVER NEEDED, stating clearly the date, the times and who you have already asked to cover for you. Alternatively, please give a written note to Julie or Mary in the shop. Obviously, the more notice you can give the better.

If no reserve is shown, please email shoprota@btconnect.com using the header ROTA COVER NEEDED, stating clearly the date and the times. Alternatively, please give a written note to Julie or Mary in the shop. Obviously, the more notice you can give the better.

If it is less than 48 hours to your shift, please still ask your reserve to help, but phone the shop on 202642 rather than email.

How can I volunteer or get more information?
Talk to Julie or Mary (the shop managers) or ring Lesley on 01635 200807 or email
shoprota@btconnect.com. We would love to hear from you!

To all our volunteers – a huge thank you. Without you, we couldn’t run our community shop so your time and effort is much appreciated.

We still need more volunteers though. Can you help?

Quotes from 2 of our 53 volunteers:

‘It’s great. I’ve met more people through working in the shop than I ever did before.’

‘I love being part of the community – chatting with customers, serving coffee, even cleaning is ok. And there’s always someone to help when you’re not sure how to do something.’

What help is needed?

There are three ways that volunteers can support us:
